How’s August been for you,Reader? I’m in upstate New York and it’s been the most joyous one—slow mornings, warm evenings, and that little hint that fall is almost here. The other day, I had a conversation with a mom on Instagram that’s been sitting with me. She reached out about Chinese for her daughter. Her frustration? Her daughter wasn’t allowed to move up a level in her current program—because she couldn’t remember the characters. Here’s the thing: this little girl has dyslexia. She mixes up characters sometimes, but she can carry on a conversation in Chinese. She can connect. She can use the language. And yet, because rote memorization was the only marker of progress, she was made to feel like she was failing. That broke my heart. And it’s exactly why I teach languages differently. When I was doing my Master’s in Education, I studied Bloom’s Taxonomy—a framework for levels of learning. At the very bottom of the pyramid? Memorization. Sadly, 95% of language learners stay stuck there forever. But at the very top? Creation. That’s the level we aim for in our classes. We don’t just want kids to “know” the language—we want them to use it. To create sentences. To tell stories. To write poems. To actually live in the language. Of course, we practice the basics. But I refuse to let kids stay in that memorization stage too long—it’s where confidence withers. Instead, we gently (but intentionally) push them into real communication. That’s where the joy is. That’s where they flourish. So here’s my question: are you ready to commit to giving your kiddo that kind of language experience? The kind where fluency grows not from drills, but from connection and creativity?
